To look at the Person and work of Jesus Christ as something that we need to honestly try to emulate, is to flirt with insanity. Who can live like He did? Who can do what He did? No one can! And that's exactly the point.

What does a baptism, family tree, and a retreat to the desert have to teach us about who Jesus really is? Everything! For today we get our first glimpse of the kind of hero that Jesus truly is, and the table will be set for everything else Jesus will accomplish in His lifetime. If we are to make sense of this King, then we must understand this passage.

Jesus Christ describes what's wrong with our world as it really is - we're the ones messing it up. He then offers a vision that's not only true and hopeful but actually acts to bring it about. Even though he's the Savior that we need and the Messiah who's come to change the world, our blindness to who he is and what he's done causes us to only want to accept him on our own terms. Jesus opens our eyes so that we might see him, and then follow him on his life-giving mission, which includes his good news to the poor.

Sometimes, even our best of intentions can be off. We want the best for ourselves and our loved ones, but we end up hurting them in an effort to protect them. The question we want to wrestle with this morning, is how do we respond when we realize that is what we have done? And better yet, how does Jesus respond when He knows we are wrong even before we realize it?

Who is able to rightly receive the Word of God and have life grow up out of him or her? The one who is ready, of course! But how do we know we're ready? Simple...we have already been plowed. If we are going to be those who experience the power of the Word of God in our lives, then we must be those who commit to do the hard work of rock and weed removal in each other's lives. For that is what it means to be instruments in the hands of the Farmer, who is busy planting the seeds of new life!

Where is your faith? This is the question that Jesus poses to His disciples in our text for this morning, and it's one that each of us needs to wrestle with if we are going to follow the real Jesus. Did Jesus come to affirm our goodness, or to make us that way? And if the latter, how does that challenge our view of ourselves? Come wrestle with us, as we interact with a God who has set us apart to be like Himself...no matter how far off we are from that right now.

The mystery and majesty of the real God scares us. Why? Because it means we cannot fully understand Him or control Him in our lives. The sad irony, however, is that to the degree that we try to establish our own rules of engagement with God, to that degree, we actually miss Him. What does the mystery of Jesus have to say to our fear? And what does it look like to actually live within the mystery of His presence in our lives? That's where we're going this morning. How do you react when you realize something is missing? How you answer that question says a lot about the value of that particular object in your life, as well as your own character. In our passage for this morning, Jesus tells three stories, all aimed at illustrating who God values, and why that should matter to us. If you are one who would never step foot in a church because you think there is no way God could accept you...OR, if you are one who is struggling to love someone in your life, then please listen in.

The apple does not fall far from the tree! Never has that statement been more true, than in the story of the very first sons born to Adam and Eve, and the unfortunately horrible set of events that shaped their lives. Join us in taking a look at the story of Cain and Abel, and there finding a window into why the gospel of Jesus Christ is so enraging to us, even as it is exactly what we need to overcome that rage.

Do you really understand the power of the Gospel? It is easy to ponder this question in a vacuum, but not so much when it comes to specific aspects of our relationships to God and each other. As we begin our foray into the first four books of Romans, what we are going to see is that how we view our enemies, has much to say about how much we have truly encountered the power of the gospel.

What is the object of your faith? For many of us in the church, our answer would be Jesus. But do we live that way? Does our confidence really find its source in Him? Or, are you one who, like me, struggles with insecurity and anxiety? If so, this morning, Paul challenges us to see why? For the answer is rooted deeply in the difference between our prideful boasting and true faith. While at the very same time, driving us to see that in order for faith to be real, it must include boasting. Confused? Come listen!

Come listen, as together we get challenged to see that simply because we cannot see or understand how God is working, does not therefore mean He is not.

Why does suffering enter our lives? As Christians, we are taught to believe that God is not the author of our suffering, but that He does use our suffering as a tool. A tool to do what? Well, as we see in our passage for this morning, God uses suffering as a spotlight, revealing just how clearly each of us loves our idols, instead of the God we seek to replace. What does that mean in your life? How do you change? Come listen!

Have you ever had the experience of thinking that someone was being a jerk to you, only to find out after the fact, that the very actions you thought were designed to hurt you, were actually there to love you? As we continue our study through the life of Joseph, what we get to see in our text for this morning, is exactly that reality, played out in relation to God. For, how much easier is it to misinterpret acts of mercy for spiteful vengeance, when it is the latter that we have earned through our life decisions? If you are one who has made some big mistakes in your life, come listen, and be encouraged by the good news according to Joseph...the news that we have a Lord, who knows us far better than we think, and yet, still loves us far more thoroughly than we could imagine!

How do you and I view the cycles of suffering in our lives? For most of us, those are simply understood as cycles to be avoided, and for good reason...because suffering hurts. This morning, however, we find a very different perspective in the unfolding story of Joseph and his family. What if our suffering was designed to be the perfect mix of love and justice, so that the pain actually creates in us, a life that could never have existed otherwise? Does that sound too good to be true? It should. But it's not.

The end of the Joseph story and the death of his father of Jacob bring us a question: given the opportunity to exact vengeance on his brothers for selling him into slavery, what will Joseph do? His brothers expect and fear the worst. But Joseph surprises them, treating them with kindness, as he says to them, "am In in the place of God?" He surprises our contemporary sensibilities as well, in effectively saying that belief in a God who judges doesn't make us more harsh and vengeful but produces the exact opposite result.

Many of us know how difficult the Thanksgiving holiday can be. And it has always been that way! Even at the very first Thanksgiving, the idea of finding God's plentiful provision in the midst of suffering and loss, was a bitter reality. As those who live in a broken world, and who make lots of mistakes, how are we to honestly live lives of thankfulness amidst the mess? In our text for this morning, we find our answer in the little town of Bethlehem ("House of Bread"), as God very clearly pushes us to see His answer at work in our lives...grace.

Who really was the Christmas child? What do those very familiar passages from Isaiah and Micah and Luke actually mean, and how do they fit together to paint a picture of exactly who Jesus came to be? Come listen, as this year we try to connect some of those dots and honestly wrestle with just how clearly the Christmas child came to be a gift...for me.

Hebrews Series- Jesus is Better: The Gospel According to Hebrews
No book in the Bible draws a clearer picture of what Jesus actually came to do, in fulfilling the law, than Hebrews. Here we get to bathe in the wonder of the God-man as He reveals the Father to us...as He reveals true humanity to us...and as He shows us what it means to have a true High Priest interceding for us. Jesus is better, because everything points to Him and is fulfilled in Him. That's why it is a wonder of wonders that He would then turn around and give all that He is, to us.

Dont' know if 12/25 was recorded. If so, I think we can just go with "Christmas Story: The Innkeeper"

January 1, 2012 - Hebrews 1:1-14 - Who's the Man?
The simple presence of New Year's resolutions in our society evidences the reality that we all yearn for a life and a world that is better than the one in which we live. And yet, the fact that we have to make the same resolutions over and over again, testifies to the fact that we are not able to create that better life on our own. Come listen, as this morning we begin to see just how clearly Jesus came to bring, and to be, the better...EVERYTHING.

January 8, 2012 - Hebrews 2:1-18 - Oh Brother!
What if God was one of us? Can you imagine? What would he be like? The writer of Hebrews takes on these questions for his readers and for us.

January 15, 2012 - Genesis 2:15-17 - The Wealth of Withholding
When God says "no," do we think he's stingily withholding from us what is good? What if the "divine 'no'" is the pathway for the fulfillment of God's promised
"divine 'yes'"?

January 22, 2012 - Hebrews 3:1-19 - Simply the Best
What is a hero? Why does it matter? To the recipients of Hebrews, Moses was the greatest of heroes. Yet, even he directs our attention to one greater than himself.

January 29, 2012 - Hebrews 4:1-13 - The Rest Giver
Wouldn't it be awesome to have vacation life EVERY week, and not just two or three weeks a year? Life, where stress and anxiety and exhaustion do not set the pace. But instead, where true rest and joy anchor everything else? You might be surprised to hear that such life is exactly what God made us to live. And that our failure to do so, has much more to say about our own hearts, than it does about the society in which we live. Come listen, as this morning we wrestle with the giants that stand in the way of our rest!
