This month is the Great American Clean-up in our country...a focus on caring for our earth as we appreciate our terrestrial home. But, for many of us, our attitude is "why bother," right? Well, who in their right mind would simply decide to not breathe, or to not eat, or to not drink, because you weren't into it anymore? No one, right? We were made to breathe, eat, and drink, and therefore we do those things in order to live. Can the same be said about caring for our earth? Listen in as we begin that discussion together...

Should we be afraid of God? The answer to this question may surprise you. To a generation that loves warm and fuzzy spirituality, the whole idea of a God to fear is a bit appalling. And yet, the question remains whether that is because God is a tyrant or because our understanding of what it means to fear Him is skewed? Come here how life with a fear-evoking God is a good thing! And more than that, how it is actually what Jesus points to as the very source of our comfort in this broken world.

him. He's the guy whose got it all--riches, wisdom, relationships, honor, & power--and yet, here in Ecclesiastes, he sums up life like this: It's Meaningless!
 What's the Point?

Not exactly what we expect to read from the Bible, is it? Well, regardless of how you might describe your religious experience up to this point, the one thing we

For others it means a completely different kind of wandering--from job to job, or in and out of relationships. Regardless of the type of wandering, the question for each of us to wrestle with, is are we finding what we are looking for? And if not, is there another way to live this life? This morning we continue in our series HOPE FOR THE HOPELESS: Finding Meaning In Life, where we've been following the escapades of a man named Qoheleth--a guy who again and again will show us why he is MOST qualified to make the statements that he does...even when what he has to say makes it sound like the Bible is the LAST place you'd be reading his words! Last week, we saw Qoheleth test his world with wisdom. Can meaning and purpose be found when we use wisdom as our tool of choice. And after coming up empty, this week, Qoheleth turns his attention to the the pursuit of meaning through pleasure. It's not that Qoheleth abandons wisdom all together, but instead asks IS THERE WISDOM in pursuing pleasure as the meaning of life...as the place where we find purpose and grounding in a world that can too often just be overwhelming. The answer we find in our text for this morning may surprise you...

This morning we dive back into our series thru Ecclesiastes that we are calling, Hope for the Hopeless: Finding meaning in life, where we've been interacting with a guy named Qoheleth, the teacher, and his rather thorough, raw quest for meaning in THIS life. Two weeks ago, he looked down the halls of wisdom, and then last week dabbled in the idea of pleasure, and in both cases we saw the same result--hopelessness! Meaning cannot be found simply by looking at wisdom or pleasure! This week, Qoheleth turns his attention to the issue of good old fashioned hard work...can meaning be found in the sweat of our brow? Is that what grounds us in a hopeful reality, or are we simply setting ourselves up for some major heat stroke in the blazing sun? Here's a hint as to where we're going...the answer's YES, and no.

Over the past 4 weeks, we have been taking an in-depth look at the words of a guy named Qoheleth...the
main voice in the book of Ecclesiastes, and the primary actor on the stage of life as found in these
chapters. As we have seen, his is a life with which we can easily relate, because Q does not pull any
punches, does he? He is real...he asks the hard questions...and he does not shy away from the hard
answers. This morning, as we continue in this series that we have been calling, Hope for the Hopeless:
Finding Meaning in Life, what we are going to see is an odd interlude in the pattern of searching that
Q has been on. After looking at wisdom, and then pleasure, and then hard work, and concluding that
there is no meaning to be found in those things alone, this week, Q stops to look at God. And the
question the Q throws out for us to wrestle with, is, as we progress on this journey to find meaning,
are we truly prepared for such a quest? Do we have the tools we need to be successful, or are we on
a journey that we have no hope of completing?

This morning we continue our quest through the book of Ecclesiastes in search for meaning and hope in life.
And once again, we turn to the Teacher, Qoheleth, to guide us into the truth. He's taken us down the
halls of wisdom, of pleasure, of hard work, and even of religion...and each path has ended with the same
conclusion--KEEP LOOKING! Meaning is not found in any of these good things in and of themselves. And so
today, Qoheleth leads us to look at a topic that all of us were kind of hoping he would avoid...MONEY!
But, as usual, what Qoheleth is ready to challenge both our own view of money, and what we think God has
to say on this topic, as what we are going see this morning is that money is, truly, the key to
happiness...sort of!

This morning we continue in our series through the book of Ecclesiastes, that we've entitled Hope For The Hopeless...Hope for those who otherwise have none. How fitting then, that today Qoheleth, the main voice in the book of Ecclesiastes, should take us down the road of justice. For to whom is hope the most difficult reality to maintain, but those who know exactly what injustice looks like, feels like, smells like...because that is LIFE for them!

And I have no doubt that while we are not experiencing the same kind of oppression as our African neighbors, each and every one of us has areas in our lives where we feel like are being wronged. With just a mention of the word, injustice, there are people, institutions, and places that undoubtedly come to our minds, that on most days we do not like to think about, because it hurts to much, right? Today's passage is going to force us to interact with this whole idea of injustice in our lives and our world. But as has been the pattern throughout Ecclesiastes, the gospel that comes through will both challenge and surprise us.

find the main voice in Ecclesiastes, Qoholeth, asking the question everyone is thinking...what does the reality of
death mean for our present and future life? How do we respond to the reality of death all around us, and what on
earth does that mean about the existence of our God? And while I certainly did not plan to have such a discussion
the very weekend of Halloween, how appropriate for us to dig into what God has to say about death on a weekend
where many of us have already been wrestling with such issues! Because, you see, no matter who you are or what
you believe, death is the one inescapable reality in all of our lives, and it provides probably the biggest obstacle
for all of us today in terms of our own belief in God. Because, after all, if God is supposed to be the source
and sustainer of life...what about death? Well, let's take a look, shall we?

In our text for this morning, we come to the final scene in the story of Qoheleth's exploits. It is the final shot before the camera pans out and all we hear is the voice of the narrator giving the final explanation of all we have just seen. Those words of explanation from the narrator will be the focus of next week's sermon, but how fitting that this week, Qoheleth should bring his pontificating to a close with a little reminiscing about his wonder years! Oh to be young again! What hope, if any, can we find in the days of our youth? Are they but a distant memory, or is there more? And what hope could youthfulness possibly bring to those of us, who no longer consider ourselves young?

This morning we come to the final words in the book of Ecclesiastes. Week after week, we have wrestled with the words of the Teacher, Qoheleth, as he has taken us on his quest to try to find real, lasting hope, in a world and in a body that at every turn seems to get in the way of exactly that. This week, after having looked down every sensible avenue for that hope with Qoheleth, we come again to the words of the Narrator. And while he too, affirms that Qoheleth is right to struggle with meaninglessness in this world, after all the grey that Qoholeth has pushed us towards, how fitting that the Narrator of Ecclesiastes would turn to the son he's been trying to teach through Qoheleth's words, and give him some black and white! For here is the end of the matter...fear God and keep His commandments. Friends, here is the Hope for the Hopeless in the text of Ecclesiastes...let's give it our attention one last time together this morning.

This morning we officially enter into the Advent season--the season of anticipation for the arrival/advent of Jesus, when we look back to His first advent, as a baby in Palestine back in the 1st C, which we call Christmas...and then look ahead to when He will come again in the future. To that end, we're going to spend the next 4 weeks wrestling with the words of the prophet Malachi.
Why Malachi? Well, because Malachi was a prophet who lived and ministered at generally the same point in history as our friend Qoheleth, from Ecclesiastes. And after getting beat up a little with the rawness of Qoheleth's words for ten weeks, how appropriate for us to now hear from one of his near contemporaries, who was commissioned by God to speak Advent truth into a very broken world. For, as we saw with Ecclesiastes, it doesn't take a very long, honest look at our world to realize that things are not as they should be. Each and everyone of us have skeletons in our closets...each and everyone of us feel the tension of living in a world and in a body that don't work the way they are supposed to...and in that reality, each and everyone of us are forced to wrestle with the truth of God: If there is a God, why isn't He fixing all of this?
Over the next four weeks, we are going to be wrestling with these questions together. And wherever you find yourself in your own journey of faith, I invite you to come along with us, as we await the coming King, Jesus, and look with eager anticipation for how He will blow our expectations of WHO He is, out of the water!

The abuse of power by those who have been set apart by God to care for us, is a tragedy that is all too real in many of our lives. How are we supposed to believe that God is for us, when He describes His love in terms of fire and pain? The short answer is, we cannot. But that's why Christmas happened...and everything changed. If the Christmas season is an odd mixture of joy and pain in your life too, then come take a listen with us, as we once again ask, "What is our hope this Christmas?"

That's why so many of us love the whole idea of Santa Claus, because year after year we do things to deserve being on the "naughty" list, and yet year after year we continue to receive presents that we do not deserve! Come see how such a picture of grace only approximates the truly undeserved merit that Christmas is all about.

How do we know that we truly "get" the meaning and hope of Christmas? The closing words of Malachi show us a way to gauge our hearts to that end, while at the same time they point us to the grace by which we live as those privileged to give all that we are, back to God. And how appropriate that Malachi would point to the issue of money in our lives, as both the test and the grace that God gives us at Christmas!

It was their way calling out the other hamburger joints for skimping on the key ingredient to making two big fluffy buns into a real burger...the beef! Over the next 13 weeks, what we are going to see from many different angles is that Paul has written this letter to the Galatians, asking the same question: Where's the beef? Or more specifically, what is the key ingredient that makes the gospel of Jesus Christ more than an empty shell of religiosity, but truly good news even to a people living 2000 years later in, Rockland County?

How do you know if you are REALLY a Christian? How can you tell when God is at work in your life? Our tendency inside the church is to think that as long as we have all of our theological ducks in a row that we really know God. The tendency in our culture is to completely dismiss the objectivity of religion in exchange for a "god" for every individual. Where is the true God to be found? This week, Paul's letter to the Galatians gives us the answer that we are looking for....and that is looking for us.

It has been 148 years since the Emancipation Proclamation and 47 years since Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous speech in his march on Washington, DC...and yet, racism remains a real problem in the United States. Clearly, it takes a lot of time, and a lot of mistakes, to work out the implications of freedom for a people who live in a culture that is not designed to afford them such liberties. In our text for this morning, what we are going to see is that the same can be said when it comes to the spiritual racism that was rampant in the 1st Century church, and is rampant in the 21st C church. And as usual, the gospel is where we will find our true freedom.

How do you know if you really get all this Christianity stuff? How do you know when you move beyond a mere understanding of the facts about Christianity, to truly being a Christian? Paul answers this question in our text, by turning our attention to the Person and work of the Holy Spirit as He is experienced in the life of a true believer. Wherever you may be on your own spiritual journey, these are words meant to challenge and encourage each of us to know what true grace really feels like.

What is the one topic that most people in our culture readily associate with organized religion, and specifically, with Christianity...but the Law. And why is that, but because we in the church have both theoretically and practically missed the entire point of God's Law in our lives. Did God give us His Law to be our stairway to heaven? Or did He give the law to be Heaven's stairway to us? In our passage for this morning, Paul leave no room for confusion as to God's design for His Law in our lives.

Many of us live our lives with a very low view of ourselves. How could anyone truly love me, if they knew all that I had done, right? In our text for this morning, Paul addresses the issues of love and value from several different angles, and drives us to see the truth of the gospel...that we are actually worse off than we think, but our adoption into the family of God, changes everything.

What does it look like live life without shame? Everyone of us has things from our past and in our present that influence the decisions we make and the way we view our lives, and therefore, we all know the power of shame as a motivator. The good news of the gospel, however, is that there is an even stronger motivator available to us that has the power to change ever aspect of who we are- our past, our present, and our future.

If you had to sum up in one word what the past two years have been for our country's economy, what would it be? How about bailout? We have been in the worst recession since the Great Depression of 1929, and ironically our government has thought it appropriate for those who were stolen from (i.e. the American public), to be the same ones to pay to keep Wall Street afloat. Such a bailout is incredibly frustrating for the normal joe taxpayer, but it can be incredibly eye-opening to realize that such a bailout is exactly how God describes His relationship with us. Today's passage pushes us to see just how undeserving of His gospel bailout we truly are, and gives us a very tangible means by which to gauge just how much we truly understand His grace in our lives.

Who has ever heard of a bashful peacock? The one bird above all others which is created to strut it's stuff and show it's feathers...how odd it would be to find a bashful peacock? In our passage for this morning, Paul points us to see that we Christians tend to live like bashful peacocks. He says that being a Christian means that by definition we have the Holy Spirit in us. He also says that being a Christian means that by definition we are those who produce the fruit of the Spirit in our lives...love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. But we do not always do so, do we? And so what then? What happens when we fail to live as who we are in Christ? Paul gives us an answer that may surprise you.

What happens when you think you know who Jesus is and where He should be in your life, but then when you go to find Him, you realize He's missing? Such is the situation that we find Mary Magdelene living through in our text for this morning, and it's one that everyone of us can easily relate to...especially this week, as our church lived through the roller coaster of emotions surrounding the miracle of Nadia Bloom. Come listen as we explore the wonder of a God who refused to live down to our expectations.

The heart of a warlord is one that we see all around us and in us. From the present-day situation in Congo, to what happened yesterday at work, the reality of our willingness to hurt others in order to protect our own self-interests, is one that cannot be denied. And yet, what do we do with that? Come listen, as this morning we explore how a relationship with Jesus Christ uniquely addressed the reality of our hearts, and actually provides real change.

Why is it that those who have survived open heart surgery are so eager to share their scars with each other? Could it be that the sharing of the scars is actually how they share in each others' victory? This morning we discuss a passage where Jesus quiets the fears and doubts of his disciples by showing them His scars and calling them to share in His victory. If you are one who has honest doubts about Jesus, and His outrageous claims, then come listen, as together we honestly wrestle with what Jesus' scars mean for us, and what our scars mean for each other.

Not too many of us enjoy being told what to do, do we? And that's why many of us would take issue with any concrete notion of God or religion...because who wants to be told what to do, right? What our passage for this morning helps us see however, is the irony that most of us live out in our lives when it comes to issue of independence...that life apart from God does not translate into independence, but utter dependence on the god-substitutes we have chosen for ourselves. If you are one who values your freedom to be your own person or who struggles to find that freedom, then come listen to exactly how only through the Gospel can such a life actually be lived.

Why is it that whenever anyone begins to talk about relationships, we all run for the hills? The answer's simple, isn't it? Because relationships take a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, and even then there is no guarantee they are going to work out, is there? But what if that was not how it had to be? What if there was another way to relate to each other that was much more humane, and even human, than how we tend to act towards each other? Today's Scripture gives us a window in the most fundamental of issues with regard to our relationships with one another, without an understanding of which, real change simply will not happen. Come listen to how the gospel actually does offer holistic transformation in and for our relationships.

Our families of origin have a profound impact on us as humans, because it is there that we are forced to have to deal with each other in all of our "glory." It is in our families that we get to see just how phony and messed up we really are, and at the same time begin to learn what true love is really all about. Come listen as we look at the familiar story of Cain and Abel, in hopes of there finding new meaning and new hope for what it means to be part of the same family.
